One of the things you get to do as a musician is play for the events that matter most to people, including friends and family. I lost a friend of more than 40 years recently and was asked by his wife to play a couple of songs at his funeral, one at the beginning of the service and one at the end. While the concluding song was light-hearted, particularly relevant to those of us who knew and loved this friend, the opening, a little more somber, was designed to leave a thought might be remembered and cherished by, in particular, the widow and family. The song, “Nature Boy,” first recorded by Nat King Cole in 1948, ends with the lyric, “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”
